I agree with S. Rekis, our roads are not being take care of properly. This is what happens when our road maintenance becomes "privatized". Usually the lowest bidder gets the contract.
I live in Lake Country and work at a local mall that borders Hwy 97 and I was totally shocked when on Friday a plowing and sanding truck came down the highway in the right lane with his big front plow down and throwing snow, ice chunks 1 foot in diameter over 30 feet onto the cars parked in the mall.
The driver of the truck was traveling at least 60-70 km/h in a 50 km/h speed zone. I couldn't believe my eyes. Some people were just getting in their vehicles when this wall of snow and ice boulders came crashing down on them knocking a senior citizen on the ground and smashing at least 3 front car windows. What the heck is the matter with this guy driving the highways truck??? Thank God no one was walking on the sidewalk when he came by or they might have been seriously injured. As it is we still don't know of all the injuries or damages caused by this "brain-dead" driver.
Saturday it happened again. We heard him coming way down the highway with his big front plow down and flying along. This time most people literally ran back towards the IDA drugstore to avoid getting hit by the huge ice boulders he was throwing. I grabbed my camera and have taken pictures of the debris left on the parking lot. This time at least 3 vehicle windows again were smashed. We finally found a phone number to call to lodge a complaint and file a claim.
I guess we will see if this time management finally does something about this.
This type of thing never happened when the government was running highways. In those days when a road was sanded, and that happened a lot, it was sanded all over the road and not just on the centerline like they do today and sparsely at that. I mean, who drives on the centerline anyway......isn't that dangerous? I think its high time that someone takes a good close look at who and how our roadways are being maintained. It used to snow a lot more than it does these last couple of decades and it was always maintained far better than it is today. Where are all our tax dollars being spent anyway?
