Not surprised by Kelowna's ranking

I, for one, am not surprised that Kelowna has slipped in the annual Moneysense magazine rankings of Canadian cities on their livability.

The Moneysense survey is not perfect and many are quick to point out its flaws.

However, it is probably the most comprehensive measure and comparison of Canadian communities on their quality of life.

Kelowna has always done poorly on the Moneysense subindices of housing affordability and crime, and the latest survey is no exception.

Affordable housing is a problem that city council loves to talk about but do nothing meaningful about. Its solution to the city’s lack of affordable housing is to link the creation of affordable housing to growth by allowing additional densities to developers who create affordable units in their projects.

Not only has this not brought down the cost of housing but the city’s continued growth has only contributed to its intractable crime problem, not to mention traffic congestion which Moneysense doesn’t even consider in its city comparisons.

Imagine how much lower Kelowna would be in its rankings if it did!
