Fortis does provide upgrade incentives

RE: Problem with Fortis' profits

In response to Mr. Brosnikoff’s questions from his recent letter, Problem with Fortis’ profits, we would like to confirm that, yes, FortisBC provides monetary incentives for upgrading to energy efficient appliances.

FortisBC‘s PowerSense program has helped customers save more than 380 million kilowatt hours since its inception in 1989 – enough to power nearly 30,000 homes each year.

We offer rebates and information for appliances that reduce electricity consumption. Under our 2011 rebate program, customers can receive between $500 and $600 when they purchase a new air source heat pump – nearly double the rebate from last year.

And in the coming weeks, rebates for energy efficient washing machines, refrigerators, deep freezers and dishwashers will also be available.

Customers that would like more information about the PowerSense program and its rebates are encouraged to call us 1-866-436-7847 or visit www.fortisbc.com.

With respect to the question regarding FortisBC revenue and infrastructure, we have worked diligently to improve the reliability of the electrical system.

This includes construction projects like the Okanagan Transmission Reinforcement project and the recently completed Benvoulin substation project.

Again, I would like to restate that FortisBC revenues are not related to electricity sales.

As a regulated utility, we receive an approved return on equity on capital invested in the utility, and this is the industry standard.

This capital goes toward needed infrastructure upgrades, providing our customers with the safe, reliable and efficient electricity they have come to expect, at the lowest reasonable cost.
