Blue Bag Blues

It is 9:30 AM Dec 26 and I’m waking up to the sound of someone rifling through my blue bags. I watch this gentlemen as he meticulously goes through every paper in the bag. I decide to call the police because not only is this man littering but I have the impression he is in the process and has the intention of committing identity theft.

The police response was ’’I’m sorry sir, what the man is doing is totally legal and it is your responsibility to monitor what you decide to recycle”. I told her that I try to be as thorough as possible with receipts etc but you never know when a little piece of paper can be overlooked.

The response was something like “too bad it’s your problem”. So I continued by saying aren’t things bad enough in the downtown core without somebody actually trying to rob me using my personal information let alone chucking garbage all over the my property?

A police car did show up and checked out the situation, then the officer called me and said there was very little he do. He said it was a homeless person looking for food….in a recycling bag.

I have total compassion for our police force and I haven’t met a bad egg in the bunch. Buuuut how are they supposed to do their job if their hands are so tightly tied? We are becoming overrun with thieves, drug mules and outright scum. I’ve decide to stop recycling which is too bad. I used to think it was time consuming but the right thing to do, now I’m worried it may cost me in the long run!

D.M.
