RE:Forgot the word defy
Remember your history. Chretien shut down debate many times because Canadian voters handed him such a large majority that there really was no opposition.
All political leader enforce the party line. They even have caucus members who's job it is to enforce the rule, they're called "whips".
No current leader has let their party members vote their conscience on any serious matter that may run afoul of the party's platform.
Even Jack Layton, who claimed he would let his members vote their own mind on the recent gun registry vote, called every NDP MP who had previously voted with the Tories and surprise, surprise, not one NDP MP voted anything BUT the party line.
That's not quite what the electorate wants, is it?
Harper didn't DEFY the GG or the Queen by proroguing Parliament, ONLY the GG can prorogue that "august" house.
By the way, Parliament has been prorogued over one hundred times since Canada's inception. Harper is responsible for two. Where was the outrage when Trudeau and Chretien prorogued for their own benefits?
