RE:Growth caps are communism
Reading everyone’s letters these last couple of days and some of the knee-jerk comments about some ideas being communism (which I find most people have little knowledge about what it really is). I believe one of the easiest solutions to help curb water use is to increase the price of water 200-300 per cent. You hit people where it hurts, the wallet, and they will learn about conservation real quick.
While a population cap has been used by many western cities, I don’t see the population supporting it. Too many deep pockets and well-intentions will keep the growth going.
But the valley governments should really look at turning water into an expensive commodity and also put a moratorium on golf courses being built as they are a huge water hog. Residents of the valley also have to do their part too - install low-flow toilets, replace leaky pipes, get a timer for your shower, install shower and faucet heads that slow the flow of water, turn outdoor faucets off when you’re not using them, and the easiest and cheapest thing to do take a two litre bottle filled with dirt or sand and put that in the tank of your toilet.
That right there will save a large amount of water. Water is a life giving resource and one we all have to take care of.
