Canadians can be very proud of Prime Minister Paul Martin. He has vowed not to stand by and allow the Sudanese massacre in Darfur to continue unanswered. Canada will provide financial aid and training to African soldiers despite the lack of effort of other nations or the UN to step up and do something to bring peace to the area. Since spring, an estimated 80,000 or more men, women, and children have been killed in this, the most horrific of all events--genocide.
I am disappointed in the American government for their reluctance to help in the Darfur region. George Bush saw a great need to rid Iraq of an evil dictator, and gave as a justification for war the fact that Hussein was guilty of genocide and torture. Now we have another African genocide in full progress, and of far greater magnitude than that which occurred in Iraq, but we have yet to hear of the American plan to save these people from massacre. Likewise, I am unaware of any British involvement. Well, there is no oil in Sudan, nor are there imaginary weapons of mass destruction, so perhaps that is the difference.
I have a new respect for our Prime Minister and fully support his pledge to help end this human atrocity. Paul Martin is truly Honorable for recognizing when the world does (and does not) need Canada's assistance.
