I am a grade 12 student at Rutland Senior Secondary and when I read today that they were planning on placing a ban on junk foods in schools in BC I disagreed very strongly. I admit there is a problem with obesity in our youth but I do not think it is strictly because we have the option to buy chips or a soda in school.
The food that our schools sell in vending machines and in school stores helps fund our schools and makes my learning a much greater experience. If they were to take that revenue away from the schools there would be less field trips, less exciting activities and many students would lose an interest in their school work. I believe a better solution would be to give students a wider variety of choices which many schools including mine have done.
I do not buy junk food daily, maybe once a week if I forget my lunch. I think many other students are the same way, if they just need a quick snack, it is easy to get.
