Two different issues

Re. Chief backs involuntary care (Castanet, Sept. 26)

Substance abuse and mental health issues are two completely different things.

A person with mental health issues needs and deserves treatment, whereas a drug abuser only needs to be wealthy enough to not have to commit crimes to support (his or her) habit. Drug abuse doesn’t seem to be the issue, only the crime committed to support the lifestyle.

There are many role models in our world today—athletes , entertainers, leaders—who buy their drugs with their own money and have an “in-house” support system.

I believe that by lumping the two concerns together, we not only muddy the water, but also water down the entire problem.
