Time for a ward system?

In light of the issues with supportive housing in Rutland, Agassiz Road, OCP changes in Pandosy, along with Councillor Donn’s statements regarding the extra workload of social media, I propose the following.

Council should start the process of setting up a ward system. It would give real and accountable representation to the different areas of the city. It would also make the election system more affordable to potential candidates.

Under the current system, there are no councillors representing downtown, Rutland, or East Kelowna. Glenmore has Gail Given, Mohini Singh and Loyal Wooldridge, Mission has Maxine DeHart and Brad Sieben.  Capri/Landmark has Charlie Hodge. Pandosy has Luke Stack. The airport area, Ryan Donn.

Under a ward system, candidate debates could then focus on the issues for that area.

Last election, there were almost 20 people running for council. That makes debate impossible and unable to focus on neighbourhood issues. This is not to say councillors shouldn’t be concerned with the city as a whole.

A ward system would show that the current council is placing the city and its residents above their own political aspirations. It might also encourage more people to get out and vote.
