Point the finger elsewhere

"Safety: Just not resonating", Castanet, April 17, 2019. The councillor waxes lyrical after reading a survey on crime and safety in Kelowna. It's her opinion that Kelownans aren't doing enough to prevent crime, that crime prevention could be bolstered with locking one's car, and participating in Neighbourhood Watch or Block Watch.

These are commendable tips, but this councillor is part of a city council that recently voted unanimously to build a Harm Reduction Wet facility in a predominantly seniors neighbourhood at 2025 Agassiz Road knowing full well that this action will lead to more enabling and using of illicit drugs, as well as bringing traffickers into this neighbourhood.

Crime prevention? Increased safety? Building strong neighbourhoods? We think not.

Our city council has ignored the foundation of Journey Home initiative, which stipulates pre-engagement with neighbourhoods, honesty, and transparency.

They've told us to call a phone number if we feel threatened on the streets of Kelowna.

They've told us if we step on a needle the chance of catching something is small.

They've told us the police can't arrest their way out of these problems.

It's apparent that the finger-pointing needs redirection, she and her cohorts could start thinking about serving and protecting Kelowna taxpayers, rather than lecturing.
