To serve and protect?

When will the RCMP in Kelowna focus on real crime instead of handing out traffic violation tickets?

I live in Rutland, and last summer experienced drug deals across from my house in front of a park.

My wife and I took down licence plates and even gave the address from where the drugs were being sold, to no effect.

We continued to watch the drug deals four or five times a day, probably more, and still no action was taken by RCMP over the entire summer. It wasn’t until the renters at the house moved that the drug dealing stopped.

It appears the RCMP in Kelowna are too busy handing out driving infractions to fight the real crime in the city.

I had an overzealous officer give me a stop sign violation ticket on the corner of Commercial Drive and Rutland Road. If you are familiar with this intersection, the stop sign is six feet away from the corner. There are bushes blocking the view, so I had to roll forward to ensure no cars were coming, at which point I turned right.

Even though I explained the situation, he stated I should have made two complete stops.

It is this overzealous behaviour and lack of fighting real crime that frustrates residents and is causing an increasing rift between the RCMP and community.

Whatever happened to serve and protect?

J. Anderson, Kelowna
