I was walking up the road to the top of Knox Mountain recently (before it was closed to traffic), and was passed by about 40 cars and trucks heading the same way.
I thought that's a pretty lazy way to get to the top. Some cars were coming back down right away, too. It was clear the people didn’t even get out to walk the final few steps to see the wonderful view from the summit. Such a waste.
And when you consider all the gas that is burned up in their efforts...
There is a ton of traffic going up to there. Mix that in with pedestrians, skateboards, cyclists… it’s a treacherous trip.
Why not build a Knox Mountain cable car?
Tourists and locals would get a fabulous view of the city. No more road traffic. It’s quiet and wouldn’t disturb the wildlife.
Local businesses could advertise on the cars to help pay for it.
Grouse Mountain, Calgary, Seattle, London, England – they all have some sort of cable car or Ferris wheel attraction that helps gives the city identity.
A developer friend of mine even has a proposal in front of Edmonton’s city council about putting one across the river from downtown to the other side, and its being looked at seriously.
Let's do it!
