Just the facts, please

It seems necessary to correct the record as far as statements about the current Liberal government under Justin Trudeau.

Letter writer Keith Gossen claims "no money for our veterans." One of the first acts of the Trudeau Liberals was to reopen nine Veterans Affairs offices that had been closed by the Harper Conservatives, including the one right here in Kelowna.

This brings back service to 3,500 veterans in the region. As Kelowna-Lake Country MP Stephen Fuhr says, the move is "about delivering the services veterans need. This is what they want and this is what they deserve.”

I encourage Mr. Gossen to check the Veterans Affairs website, where he can plainly see the figures for planned spending initiatives.

He attempts to use the alt-right stigma against the Clinton Foundation as an invective against Canada's announcement of $20 million in spending for that organization. This was part of an announcement of $241.5 million to "support projects that will provide critical sexual and reproductive health services and information and advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls."

These are objectively good things that support Canada's position regarding the advancement of women's rights and gender equality on a global scale. I don't pretend to know what Mr. Gossen's morals are when it comes to ensuring safe reproductive health services are delivered to women, but supporting these programs is vitally important.

The incident in Creston took place nearly 20 years ago. Then-schoolteacher Justin Trudeau apologized to the reporter the next day. The reporter accepted the apology and has expressed that she has no intention of reopening that issue for further discussion. Her wishes are to be respected – consent is one of the central elements of the MeToo movement, and Mr. Gossen's effort to cast doubt as to the sincerity of Trudeau's apology as "brushing it off" suggests he is more interested in smearing the prime minister than respecting a woman's right to privacy.

No government is perfect, but as a Liberal, I would happily take the successes of this government over its Harper-led predecessor, which increased the national debt by $160 billion, shut down veterans' offices, muzzled scientists, broke election laws in every election it won, and sowed seeds of dissent and disharmony among Canadians.
