I have absolutely zero concerns for my personal safety.
My daughter and I walk downtown frequently. We live two blocks off Main Street.
My main safety issue is with the speed of traffic. I sit at a coffee shop nearly every morning and see the vast majority of drivers doing well above the posted 30 km/h, some as high as 70 km/h.
Never have I seen anybody pulled over for speeding. The police are more than happy to put up a speed trap on Eckhardt by the SOEC, though, to get people going 60 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on what is almost a highway.
Pedestrian crossings on Main Street are like Russian roulette, waiting while car after car goes by without noticing.
