What happened to the trees?

As I often drive the route along Highway 97 from the university towards town, I am very sad that the medians between the six lanes of new highway have been paved.

Previously, there were segments that had been landscaped and treed, and now all of that has disappeared.

I do not believe this is the right approach to having a welcoming entrance from the airport into Kelowna.

Trees that were previously planted in the median softened the concrete effect, added shade and ambiance, and provided an inviting entry.

I do understand that it takes effort to clean the weeds and water and prune these areas. From my perspective, it would have been well worth the value in doing this.

It would have taken a partnership between the province and the city to have achieved this.

The city promotes being “water-wise,” and it would have been an opportunity to have xeriscape planting along this stretch of highway and really highlight how special we are. We could have shown leadership and initiative in advocating for the medians to be beautiful.

Instead, they are just ugly concrete.
