Hoping words were heard

Recently I saw (as I have seen many times before) "dumpster divers", as apparently that is what they are called. This time was different, an older fellow was showing a young fellow the "how to's" on this one. I watched out the window, as the young one went inside the dumpster appearing to be high on something and singing rap songs. The older fellow left him there, although calling for him to join up as he left.

I watched intently, as I did not know what this young fellow was capable of, he saw me watching, apologized and hoped that I hadn't called the police. I told him I tried, but their non emergency number was past their opening time. I asked him what he was doing and why? He said that this is what he has become, I asked his age and he said 25. I told him there was help out there for him and he could succeed at anything he put his mind to. I pleaded with that young man to find help; my heart broke as he explained to me that he recalls a more successful image of himself but can't quite grasp it anymore. His family does not support him due to his drug use.

He was such a pleasant young man and having had 5 kids of my own, my heart continued to break. He thanked me for my words and said  "one day, I'll come take you for a coffee". I smiled and said I'm counting on it. He then hoped he would get a bed in the shelter here in Penticton for the night and then he left.

My words to him were very sincere and heartfelt although somewhere beneath the swirling in his head, I cant help but feel that although acknowledged, went not unheard, but "unable" to help himself. I cried after he left and I will never forget him. I wondered though why is there no one I can call to come help this poor soul, right now!

Penticton, such a culture shock from even 20 km away. So very very sad!
