No fireworks a shame

It would seem that the folks running Kelowna Festivals lack creativity in the face of adversity. Fireworks are a major tradition in celebrating Canada Day and with this year marking the 150th anniversary of Confederation, even more so.

Two reasons were cited, lack of beach space with the high water and bladder dams in place (totally understandable) and public safety. However lets look at solutions, not problems.

The Simpson boardwalk still exists, as do the pedestrian walkways at Tugboat Beach, the Yacht Club and Stewart Park. So what we need is somewhere the beach folks can go in large numbers. Well how about closing the Southbound lanes of the Bennett Bridge, leave the Northbound lanes open to two way traffic for access. Likely it could be our local MP’s last hooray and good on her for authorizing it. For the fireworks, instead of launching from the beach area of City Park, place them on barges in the middle of the lake and then all people located at these different spots can view them.

That’s called creative problem solving.
