Free transit?

Here is an idea that doubtless will never fly, but an idea none the less.

Make all public transit free, paid for through taxes. Not only would this substantially increase ridership but everyone would benefit. Even those who never use public transit, who would notice less traffic congestion and everyone would notice cleaner air, especially as busses transition to electric fuel. 

Carbon taxes? Just a thought.
