Out-of-bounds decision

Hopefully, the UBCO brains trust will take a mulligan over its out-of-bounds decision to cancel the varsity golf program.

The university's move to scrap $40,000 to $60,000 in funding, because the dozen golfers didn't generate enough fans, is short sighted. The value of the investment should be measured by the potential return it provides UBCO, and for the opportunities it brings to the Okanagan golf industry and students.

Surely, the price of a used car is worth the expenditure to produce future stars like Brooke Henderson, Mike Weir or Penticton's AJ Eathorne.

Unlike most other sports programs, golf graduates are bound to find professional employment, particularly in the Okanagan's popular golf industry.

Once again Canadian talent will have to find fulfillment in the US, where universities have long understood the value of their athletic programs.
