Daytime running lights

Richard Foster who recently submitted a letter urging the use of daytime running lights may also be surprised to know that Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) and its Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (MVSRs) require that all new vehicles sold in (or imported into) Canada and built after December 1, 1989, be fitted with daytime running lights (DRLs) that go on when you start the vehicle.

Unfortunately, the RCMP and ICBC do not see the value in enforcing the law. After the head on it is hard to tell if the DRL’s were on or not. I am sure we have all had scary times when passing and you can’t tell for sure how far away the oncoming vehicle is from you because they do not have lights on. The same for driving the connector in fog and snow.

In states like Florida they are way ahead of us. There is a windshield wiper law in effect for headlight use. When the windshield wipers are on, the headlights must be on. Rain, fog, smoke or mist conditions require headlights be turned on.

I believe a lot of lives could be saved and injuries avoided if the law was clear and enforced.
