Thoughts on His nature

This is in reply to the letter "What is the Father's nature?" written by Mr. David Buckna.

First off, I would like to thank you for your letter of inquisitiveness. I'm a firm believer in learning about other people's cultures, faiths and religions. I learned some insightful things from your letter regarding the beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Though I am not a member of The Jehovah's Witnesses, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (some also my know us as "Mormons"). May I share with you our beliefs of who God the Father is and His nature?

In our Articles of Faith, the first article states, "1) We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost." We believe that God is our literal Father in Heaven. That we are His children and that He loves all of us. We believe that Jesus Christ is His Only Begotten Son, the Saviour and Redeemer of the world - our Advocate. Where our beliefs differ from many Christian denominations is that we believe Them to be separate, individual Beings, unified in purpose - "to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of mankind" (Moses 1:39).

Evidence that God and Jesus Christ are two individual Men are found in the Bible - "It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me." (John 8:17-18 Holy Bible/KJV)

Modern-day scripture and revelation has revealed the following - "The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us." (Doctrine & Covenants 30:22)

Finally, the testimony of the Prophet, Joseph Smith, when he received the First Vision - "... I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! (Joseph Smith History 1:16-17)

I invite others to visit Mormon.org to learn more about our faith and also encourage others to write in and share their beliefs. I know it would be a great way to connect the faith community here in the Okanagan. God bless you all!
