It wasn't just 12 seniors

A reply to the “West Kelowna AARP” letter.

Twelve seniors did not band together to stop the AAP to borrow money to construct a City Hall in West Kelowna.

For your information:

Some of us were not seniors. Some of us were seniors who are not retired. Some of us were working individuals who are not seniors. Some of us are male. Some of us are female. Some of us have little or no post secondary education. Some of us have University degrees. Some of us have plenty of real “hard knock” Life Experience. Some of us (or our parents) had to fight for the freedom and democracy that we all enjoy today.  Some of us are Grandparents. But, all of us are intelligent human beings who recognize that you are angry because you did not get your way.

Sadly, your letter is filled with negative words that obviously indicate your personal ire in light of the result of the AAP. Venting your spleen in such an opinionated manner is not being particularly mature. Your judgment of us, displayed in such phrases as “12 retirees with nothing better to do than complain” and “coerced or bullied by a very small group of disgruntled seniors” is scathing and inaccurate.

Our support from the public began the moment we offered them the opportunity sign the form without the attached problem of having to return it to the City. Many people thanked us for making “voting no” easier for them. Probably because they are not retired with all the time in the world on their hands, but busy raising their family!

If we were in agreement with you, you would have seen our methods of collecting votes as innovative, exciting or well thought out. As we were not, a derogatory slant is your attack.

Each and every one of us had slightly different reasons for wanting this AAP to fail. Those reasons are ours and we own them. Your sweeping statements regarding being “mad at our council” and so on are your take, and only yours.

For your further information, people do not just drop dead on retirement! We are often pretty busy volunteering (hospital, thrift shops, sporting events, etc). We do not have exemption from taxes because we reach that milestone in our life. We have to pay bills on fixed incomes and make ends meet. Not all seniors have unlimited incomes! We, and our children (grown up or not), will be paying for the City Hall, and yes, there will be a City Hall eventually.

Your comment regarding Penticton is interesting. You see, their first City Hall was two houses joined together, bought four years after incorporation. 28 years later, in 1940, Penticton’s first purpose built City Hall was built. Perhaps they had more basic things to spend their money on?
