West Kelowna AARP

It appears that 12 seniors have banded together to stop the AARP for the new City Hall in West Kelowna.

I know one of them very well and met briefly with another to discuss why they were against a new City Hall. Neither of them are against constructing a new City Hall. One was mad at the AARP process and the other was mad that DWK was going to purchase land and not utilize some existing land that is owned by DWK. For these angry reasons, they put together a group of seniors to solicit signatures from the general public. The team set up in front of shopping malls, in front of their houses, the Warriors games and went door to door to garnish support for the NO side.

As of April 13, there were only 259 ‘no’ votes. The team was put in action to impose their thoughts onto others in a negative direction. Not once was it mentioned that “there is no increase in taxes, the IH is a signed tenant as of December and the upper floor is being rented out to high paying commercial businesses until space is needed.” Their process was no different than a religious group going door to door trying to impose their religious beliefs on the residents.

I find it very disturbing that a group of 12 retirees, with nothing better to do but complain, can dictate how we move forward as a City.

DWK now has a higher population than Penticton and we'll continue to run our City Hall from an old Community Centre with outside portables. If the nay sayers felt strongly about the ‘no’ vote, each one should've downloaded the form and mailed it in on their own accord, without being coerced or bullied by a very small group of disgruntled seniors trying to impose their wisdom and anger onto the citizens.

The older seniors that did this are not our future and will not be paying for this. The younger generation seems to want to move forward with the City Hall and general progression in life, but now it has been stalled by a handful of angry people with too much time on their hands. It'll now be delayed and more costs added for the Referendum. If it does go ahead (and eventually it will), this small group has just caused unnecessary delays and costs because they're mad at our council for their own personal reasons.
