Hockey needs change

In light of the story you covered earlier this week about the appalling behaviour of some hockey parents in Osoyoos, please publish this feel good story.

I would like to introduce to you a very special 9-year-old passionate hockey player, my nephew, Rex Rhyno. He and his family of 8 live in Princeton. Rex is the oldest and is extremely passionate about playing hockey. He played for the Atom House Princeton Posse this past season.

The team had a very successful season winning a league banner. Rex was glad to be a part of it all even if he only saw maybe 3 or 4 minutes of ice time each game. He never lost hope, always tried his hardest and treated all teammates and coaches with the utmost respect, despite the fact that the game was promoted as fun and fair.

You see, being from a small town, Rex spent most of his time at his second home, the rink. His dad would take him there to skate and shoot every single day. He would spend the entire day there if it wasn't for his mom calling him home to eat. Even if his team did not have practice, Rex would be at the rink. He knows the arena employees by first name and welcomed by them with open arms.

When year end celebrations came around and team trophies were being handed out, Rex was discouraged to realize that not only he, but 3 other players on his team, would not be receiving a team trophy. He went to his mom and asked if he could buy the kids a trophy that didn't get one with his own money. Rex had been saving his money for yet another CCM hockey stick.

Touched by her sons empathetic generosity, she agreed.

CCM caught wind of Rex’s story and tweeted about it. They praised the 9-year-old who could teach all of us hockey parents, coaches and spectators a thing or two. CCM wanted to praise Rex, so they sent him a hockey puck autographed by Connor McDavid and a CCM hockey stick that isn't available for purchase yet.

My heart is so full today by the kindness and compassion of a single 9-year-old boy. I always preach to my kids to be the change you want to see.

The hockey world sure can learn from this young fella.

Rose Rhyno
