My first Fortis bill

I have just received my first Fortis electric bill after moving to Kelowna 2 months ago. I was surprised that BC Hydro did not expand to this area & was told that Fortis is where I need to apply for my electricity, of course with a $15. Connection fee, even though I was with BC Hydro for over 35 yrs. (OK, I can take that.)

I was then told when I applied for an account in Sept, that unless I had a credit check done, the security deposit to start an account would be $200. I was absolutely shocked at this, again, I was with hydro for over 35 yrs & am a retired single person, so after much discussion with Fortis ,I allowed the credit check (which I did not agree with)

I now received my first bill which is a 60 day reading. I try to keep my consumption down & try to reduce my carbon footprint , so I was surprised that instead of a bill that I am used to, it was almost double. I live in a condo, so it is just electricity that I consume. My energy used was only $57. For 2 months, but my bill was $92. After reading it over I noticed a basic customer charge of an additional $30.33. I emailed fortis & was told this is for the use of the lines, billing, meter reading etc. excuse me but is this not the cost of doing business. My bill had an additional 53% added to it for basically a user fee.

Since there is nowhere else to go, customers are being held hostage.

This does not seem like a lot, but it is an additional 53% of my consumption, which is a gouge, especially when I read what the CEO of Fortis earns in a year.

If I had the choice, I would not use Fortis but we are at their mercy. Hopefully customers are reading their bills & are contacting Fortis with this concern.
