Dougall a speedway

Take a drive down Dougall Road south.

In the city's current plan re the traffic circle at the north end of Dougall, traffic doesn't even begin to pick up speed until it rounds the corner heading south, where drivers put the pedal to the metal.

Common sense would tell anyone this is another example of a total waste of taxpayers dollars.

No speed bumps on Dougall, where it's not uncommon to see vehicles driving at more than 120 km/h. That's right, well over the limit, as well as street racing.

At the same time, traffic-calming measures are to be installed on side roads where vehicles don't pick up any real speed.

Wonder why some of the people don't want speed bumps? How about the neighbour down the road whose kid would probably smash his car up hitting a speed bump, or the numerous people using Dougall as a bypass route or people on side roads not really affected by the high speed and traffic volume.

Several years ago Dougall was deemed a disaster, so at that time speed bumps/traffic-calming measures were approved to be installed when it was repaved.

Since the road has been repaved, there have been thousands of dollars wasted in studies, community meetings, etc., without the real issue of controlling speeders being properly addressed or the speed bumps being installed as was approved.

Next year, when the city presents its upcoming budget to council, you can rest assured myself and numerous others will be taking councillors and the mayor to task for the extreme waste of taxpayers dollars regarding Dougall Road and several other wasteful projects.

Jim Sutherland, Kelowna
