Degrees vs Trades

As someone who is currently working as a tradesperson, I'd like to recommend to all parents and students who are discussing entering into a trade program, please don't. Please do yourself a favour now, and save yourself the grief.

In the previous letter, Mr. Kiesewetter simply nails the point on the head. In half the time required, you can achieve a degree, more than likely nail down a job that will be pay substantially more, and will be fulltime with actual benefits, i.e. RRSP's, paid holidays, medical, etc. You can take that off the table in trades. Overtime pay, what’s that?

Trades have always had a pattern of highs and lows, and you continually find yourself unemployed at points throughout the year due to shortage of work, always out of your control. Since you’re already being substantially underpaid, you will never get ahead. Of course, if you like to struggle and feel enormous amounts of pressure and stress due to financial constraints and obligations, please sign up.

Simply put, a 4 year degree will put you further in life. It will be a struggle for many, but at least it would be compounded over 4 years and not a lifetime. If you have the choice and the chance, dig deeper, you'll find that the trades route is not that enticing.
