Drivers Getting Dangerous

There is one thing in this town that makes me very upset (other than the homeless problem, of course). I am speaking of the practice of a select few who feel that they have the right to make left turns through oncoming traffic at non-controlled intersections. I also have a problem with the people who stop and let them through. I am not talking about left turns at the lights but at places like turning left into Canadian Tire and cutting through traffic to get to where they are going.

This is so unbelievably unsafe. I have seen too many near-misses to count. Traffic coming on the far right lane may not see the vehicle sneaking through the other two lanes. You are doing no one a favour by letting these people through. In fact you are risking a lot by catering to their poor planning. I do not make left turns where there is not a light. I go around the block. I would rather go out of my way for two minutes than expect someone to let me through. Using the above example of turning into Canadian Tire is a perfect example of the pig-headedness of these drivers. There is a left turn light 100 metres back onto Banks where you can cross the highway safely, but no, these drivers have to go the direct route and risk a lot to save a little time.

I hope that people will read this letter and think twice about letting someone turn left from the opposite direction. You are not doing anyone a service by doing so. You could be part of the cause of a very serious accident. To you drivers who expect others to be "nice" to you, plan your route better. Avoid left turns where it is not safe. Think about it!

A.H.
