BC Family Fishing Weekend

Each Father’s Day marks the BC Family Fishing Weekend in British Columbia, which is just around the corner! From June 13th to 15th there are numerous fishing events throughout our province to help encourage friends and families to come out and experience angling. One of the highlights of this weekend is that people do not require a BC Freshwater Fishing License. Once people have tried angling for their first time there is a good chance that they will get hooked on fishing and will want to take up this nourishing activity.

Recreational angling plays a large role in British Columbia’s economy and lifestyle! To put it into perspective, recreational angling contributes close to $1.2 billion annually to the BC’s economy while supporting thousands of jobs in our communities. By encouraging friends and families to try fishing during the Family Fishing Weekend this assists in maintaining this robust industry in BC. Not to mention it helps to encourage our younger generation to get connected to the outdoors.

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC) stocks numerous lakes in the province as family fisheries. A family fishery is considered a lake that has simple fishing regulations, easy access and many can be fished from shore or a pier. To name a few of these lakes within the Okanagan region: Shannon Lake, Beaver Lake, Mission Creek Greenway Pond (Hall Rd), Yellow Lake and Osprey Lake.

One of the most popular family fishing events during this weekend is at Shannon Lake. In collaboration between the Peachland Sportsmen Association and the FFSBC, families can show up and they will be provided all the required fishing gear to try their luck. Also with the help from volunteers, people can learn how to fish, so no experience is required!

Another great event that families and friends can participate in is the annual Kelowna Fishing Derby on Okanagan Lake. This event is put on by SunCruiser Media and Rodney’s Reel Outdoors Fishing Charters. The derby allows anglers to fish anywhere on the lake and it is a catch and release method of derby. The longest rainbow trout wins! Top prize for this event is $4000! What a great way to spend a day out on the water with friends and family!

One doesn’t need an arsenal of fishing gear to get started. Some of the sheer pleasures of angling can be experienced by using a simple bobber and baited hook! Catching fish is just a bonus to the fun filled day that can be experienced while being in the outdoors with friends and family!
