Chasing the bacon

If you're a runner or a bacon lover, start training and eating right now.

The Great Canadian Bacon Chase is back for its third year. It will be held at Parkinson Recreation on the last Sunday of September.

This was a silly idea that took off and made national news last year. The Bacon Chase is a five-kilometre run or a 0.05 km walk with unlimited bacon. Every kilometre along the run is a bacon station plus a big tray of bacon.

The 0.05 km is simply the walk from your car to the pig pen, which serves food, beverages and unlimited bacon.

Reid & Associates Financial Solutions is the title sponsor again this year because you need to have your insurance in check before you run a five K with unlimited bacon. LOL.

Get your tickets here as it has sold out the last two years.

Hayden Duval is a creative chef who has been organizing Elixer H Homebrew Kombucha tastings for some time now. Kombucha is fermented tea.  He uses a loose leaf tea from Chai Baba Tea House and locally foraged/grown product from the Okanagan.

He uses wild flower honey from Arlos Honey farm that feeds the yeast and bacteria and gets converted into healthy acids. Tastings are $10 and are run every two weeks. Aug. 16 you will have 18 or so to choose from.

When you meet Hayden please ask him to grow his mullet back. You can’t be making kombucha and look like a downtown professional at the same time. LOL. Check him out.

Accelerate Okanagan is very excited that Atrium Venture VCC has introduced a $5-million investment fund that is going to be dedicated to helping B.C.’s hot-tech industry.

One of the biggest challenges for Okanagan tech start ups is the access to venture capital and Atrium is looking to fill this critical gap. Jeff Keen of Wheelhouse Management will be the fund manager.

Jeff has a great reputation in this industry as he is a long-time tech entrepreneur and former CEO of Accelerate Okanagan. Check out Heidi Mann’s tech community blog for more details.

The United Way is still looking for boxers to join its Boxing for Community.  Boxers will get a personal training coach, gloves, wraps and shorts. The gala will be held on Nov. 3. You will fight three, two minute rounds against another amateur.

The trash talking has already begun by Jeremy Luypen because Ross Derrick hasn’t shown up for practice yet. Ross might be the better chef ,but my money is going on Jeremy. Contact Shelley Gilmore for more information.

Opera Kelowna’s The Magic Flute starts tonight. If you’re wondering what you should do this weekend, I have been told that this is a stunning performance of Mozart’s opera.

This main-stage performance is the biggest production of Opera Kelowna's season. It has a professional lead cast and orchestra as well as a 30-voice chorus of young, aspiring opera students and members of the community.

Alexandra Babble is the driving force behind Kelowna’s Opera scene and watch out because she is a passionate young woman.

Wanna talk bikes?  Head on over to Moto Meetup at MotoVida Cycle on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m.

See you in City Park for the Moonlight Movie on Thursday. It doesn’t matter if you like Zootopia or not, it’s pretty cool to watch a movie on the Boys & Girls Club inflatable movie screen under the stars, just like at the drive in.

Activities start at 7 p.m., but the movie will start at dusk.

The Tragically Hip’s last show is Aug. 20., and the South Okanagan Event Centre has opened its doors to air the show live in a concert like atmosphere.

I asked Dean Clarke why he opened it up and is giving away free tickets and his response was, “because it’s the right thing to do.”

It’s not always about money. Get your free tickets

Make it a Great week.
