Cessna in creek at YLW
Oct 4, 2013 / 12:58 pm
UPDATE: 1:15 p.m. - A student pilot has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after the Cessna 172 he was training in slipped off the runway and into Mill Creek.
Kelowna Airport Manager, Sam Samaddar says the pilot was practicing touch and gos (landings and takeoffs) on runway 16, the airport's runway from the north.
"The aircraft veered off the east edge of the runway and carried into Mill Creek," says Samaddar.
"It had about 35 gallons of fuel on it. We had some fuel leaking into the creek itself."
Samaddar estimates about 5 gallons of fuel spilled into the creek, however, he says the leak has been contained.
"The valve in the aircraft is shut off. As part of our response protocol with our Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting we did have booms put into the creek immediately," says Samaddar.
Samaddar says it's not known exactly what caused the plane to veer into the creek but indicated there was no direct communication between the plane and the tower.
"He was probably practicing and something happened with the aircraft and he lost control."
According to Samaddar the plane was probably between a landing and takeoff when the incident occurred.
The pilot, the lone occupant of the aircraft, was able to get out of the Cessna on his own. He was checked out by airport rescue before paramedics took him to hospital.
The plane belongs to Carson Air.

The runway is open and commercial flights in and out of YLW are as scheduled. Environmental measures are in place for Mill Creek located along the runway.

According to reports no one was seriously injured.
Hazmat crews are also at the scene due to reports of liquid spills.
The runway remains open.
Castanet has reporters at the scene.
