Child with rare illness runs for the cause

It may not be a run across the country, but for five-year-old Seattle Lennox, eleven laps around her school gym with her friends in support of the Terry Fox Run is just as impressive.
When Seattle was just fifteen months old, she was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called Transverse Myelitis, which affects the spinal cord and causes paralysis.
“Only about one-third recover enough to walk again,” said Lindsay.
Seattle is one of the youngest TM patients the Children’s Hospital has ever seen, and because of the early age of onset, her diagnosis was that she would remain paralyzed from the neck down for life. Brain damage was also likely. Four years later, however, after countless therapies and medical interventions, Seattle is able to walk and run with the aid of leg braces and arm crutches.
“Nobody knows what causes (Transverse Myelitis) so there’s no cure or treatment, I just really want people to know what a terrible disease this is and try to raise some awareness.”
Lindsay sees many parallels between cancer and transverse myelitis; both have unknown causes, no known cure and both require awareness before treatments can be developed
“It occurred to me that during this time of remembering Terry Fox and all that he stood for and what he gained for the advancement of cancer research, that others may be interested in an inspiring and hopeful story of another true warrior.”
