Cloudy skies and rain Saturday morning were not enough to keep more than 1100 runners and 220 volunteers from raising $90,000 for Kelowna General Hospital in the first ever Grant Thornton 5k Run in Colour.
“We only started fundraising three months ago so we’ve had a really good pickup from the community,” said Doug Rankmore, CEO of the KGH Foundation.
“It’s a popular event, it’s a happy event, and it’s something the Hospital Foundation thought was a great way to involve the community and a good way for the community to support the hospital.”
The first runner to cross the finish line was Merritt resident Chase Walter. His team, No Paint, No Gain, was one of the highest-raising teams, collecting $2500 for the hospital.
“I thought it was a good cause and it was lots of fun,” he said. “I’d definitely do it again.”
Runners of all ages and abilities started at Waterfront Park at 10 a.m. and were splashed with coloured chalk every kilometer by volunteers and spectators.
“I’m participating in the Run because I’m grateful for all that the Kelowna Hospital does for all of us in the community and I also love being at an event where citizens come out and have fun together for a good cause,” said Susie Docherty of Kelowna.
Justin Pearson is a science student at UBCO with intentions of entering the medical field after graduation. He decided volunteering would be a good way to say thanks to the hospital for the care several of his family members received over the years.
“KGH did a wonderful job taking care of them so this is one way I can give something back.”
