Pot broker testifies at Verma trial

Text message transcriptions between Brittney Irving and another marijuana ‘broker’, in the days leading up to her disappearance, were read aloud at Joelon Verma’s first-degree murder trial on Wednesday.
The court heard Brad Saari testify that he and Irving had many ongoing conversations between April 4 and April 6 – the day she disappeared. Irving had told Saari that she had completed a couple of ‘big jobs’ lately and was looking for more work. It had previously been heard that after getting busted in March 2010, Irving had been worried about paying her legal fees.
Later messages showed she was seeking 70 pounds of marijuana and that whomever she was buying for, had the cash to pay and wanted to buy in bulk. There were more conversations about the price and quality of the pot and the size of the packages.
Working as a go-between for suppliers and distributors, the court heard Irving was attempting to fill a large order in the days before her death and was having difficulty coming up with enough marijuana.
Earlier testimony by Irving’s brother, Joze Macculloch substantiated these claims. He also testified that his sister had been setting up a large deal before she disappeared.
Saari went on to tell the court that he met and started a sexual relationship with Irving after a chance encounter outside a club in the late spring or early summer of 2009. That bond eventually became platonic, but their working relationship stayed the same.
Defense Counsel Alexander Watt attempted to paint Saari as a high-level pot grower and broker with ties to the Hells Angels, supposedly based on claims by the RCMP.
Saari shrugged off the allegations, and Justice Alison Beames eventually asked Watt about his line of questioning, who responded that Saari’s character and credibility was relevant to the case.
The crown alleges Verma shot Irving and dumped her body in the woods.
The trial continues on Thursday.
