Elderly fishermen rescued

A pair of elderly males in their 80’s had to be rescued Friday night when the motor of their fishing boat stopped working, leaving them stranded on a small island on McCulloch Lake.
Eight COSAR members, three trucks, a boat and two ATV’s were called in when the two gentlemen failed to return from a fishing trip.
Once on scene, COSAR began a water search for the missing males, while the ground ATV team performed a shoreline search. 40 minutes after the search started the water team found the males safe, but cold.
“The men did the right thing by beaching the boat on a small island and waited to be rescued,” said COSAR Vice President Duane Tresnich. “When they did not return home at the appointed hour, one of the gentlemen’s wives called the RCMP and reported them overdue. The RCMP attended the area and found their truck and then called COSAR to come and search the area.”
One of the males was transported to hospital for treatment of mild hypothermia.
“The males were not completely equipped for their nights stay as they did not have a cell phone on them and they did not have a survival kit in the boat," said Tresnich. "Even a small one that had matches and material to light would have helped them stay warm."
It is reported that the trip was not a total waste however, as the men did catch two fish.
