UPDATE SEPT 11 13:00: Andre Thomas, Owner of Memphis Blues Barbeque House says he also received the scam email. Thomas tells Castanet that the RCMP were not concerned when he called them. "They did not take our concerns very seriously and were told that nothing "illegal" had happened and that they were not responsible for protecting our 'reputation,'" wrote Thomas. He says he's glad another restaurant has come forward.
ORIGINAL: A new scam has made its way to Kelowna, and this time it targets restaurateurs.
In an email a person claims they ate at the restaurant and received food poisoning and now want to be reimbursed for their meal, but of course they do not have a receipt.
“We get emails like this regularly and they are always made out to ‘undisclosed recipients,’ it reminds me of the old dry cleaning scam,” explains Rose’s Pub Manager Andrew Neville
“We’ve had calls like this in the past and when you ask them for details about their order they never know, they say ‘We had two beers’ but they don’t remember what type of beer or the food they ordered, it strikes me as odd,” adds Neville.
Local RCMP have not heard of other restaurants falling prey to the scam around the Okanagan but definitely want to issue a warning.
“I can see how it would be used, and Restaurants will ‘fall for it’ because they want to uphold their level of service,” says RCMP Cst. Kris Clark.
Here is the opening paragraph of the email received by Rose’s Pub.
Letter insert (not edited for spelling, grammar or format =/0/A/D are in the email)
“Hello, to whom it may concer….me and my husband recent=ly attended your restaurant in Kelowna well on Vacation we were visiting from Vancouver British Columbia Canada. I have a serious issue I would like to report to your attention. We became very sick the following morning at th=e hotel just before we were to catch airplane home. We are being told this =was caused by food poisoning so this means the food we were served someone =either did not cook this properly or there was something wrong with the foo=d. either way the two of us are not happy we would like to be fully REFUNDE=D as I feel that is fair, I have no issue with you mailing us a check for a= full refund on our meal. The details of our bill 2 Orders of Chicken=0A_ 2 glasses of white wine=0A=0A=0Aour order was cash =paid and the bill was left at the table when we left the restaurant along w=ith the tip we left the server.
Cst, Clark adds that there are telltale signs in this particular scam letter that should raise flags.
“They didn’t have the restaurants actual name in the email, they don’t have a receipt, and their spelling and grammar is off.”
If you receive a scam email like this or any other contact the BC RCMP.
