Resident wants guard rail after crash

One resident living in the Glenmore area of Kelowna believes a barrier needs to be erected along Mckinley road after another vehicle lost control and crashed into her backyard.
Carrie Gullion lives on Arthur Road, but her yard backs onto McKinley. The latest crash is the third such incident to happen on her property since she moved there 10 years ago.
“It’s pretty scary because it’s close to my house,” says Gullion, who was not at home when the latest event occurred.
However three young children were in the house at the time, and she says everyone is fortunate that no one was in the backyard at the time.
The other two incidents that saw cars end up in her backyard occurred when a deer crossed in front of a driver who veered out of the way, and an impaired driver who failed to negotiate the road. Both incidents saw vehicles tumble down the embankment, with only trees to stop them from colliding with her home.
“I’ve lived there 10 years and I’ve been pretty lucky but one time I did have to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting a deer,” she says.
“I didn’t swerve because I knew that I would go down the embankment, I chose to hit the deer instead. Most people, their reaction is to swerve. But there is nowhere to go except down.
Gullion has written a letter to the City of Kelowna asking that something be done. She would like to see guardrails placed on the road behind her home, noting that it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt or killed.
