Buyer beware: electronics deal a scam
Aug 28, 2013 / 5:00 am
A Kelowna man learned a hard lesson after purchasing second rate electronics out of the back of a van.
The victim says he was coming out of the liquor store across from Orchard Park Monday when he was approached by two men in a blue van.
"They said they had a bunch of (home theatre) systems they were supposed to put into some businesses in town and they had been sent some extra systems and if you're interested in a real good home theatre, you can get a real good deal on it."
He says they were packaged up nice and looked legit so he purchased one for $300.
"They have a website set up (www.rolkolsen.com) that backs up their story - but the stuff is just junk. Like $50 from K-Mart. They are really done up nice all shrink wrapped like you would get from a store."
He got the licence plate number of the van and contacted the RCMP.
"The RCMP said they knew the licence plate number and they come out of Langley. They buy all this junk cheap and flog it off cheap."
RCMP Cst. Kris Clark says police are aware of the scam and remind people you get what you pay for.
Clark says in most cases the items are either stolen, or in this case, junk.
"They usually come up from the coast, spend a few days in town and then move on," says Clark.
He add it's hard to charge the scammers because they don't know exactly what the suspects are saying to the victims.
Clark says about all they can do is get them for selling without a business licence which is a bylaw offence.
