Another week, another scam

It seems people aren't getting the message.
Four people contacted Kelowna RCMP recently saying they fell victim to the latest scam to hit the Okanagan - the so-called Microsoft scam.
The scam consists of a cold-call from a person claiming to represent a well-known brand such as Microsoft. The person goes on to tell the would be victim they are checking into a computer problem, virus or infection that has been detected on their computer.
Cst. Kris Clark says the scammer gets the victim to give up remote access to their computer and will then spend some time on the computer trying to demonstrate where the problems are in order to convince the victim to pay a fee for a service that will allegedly 'fix' the computer.
"While there is probably nothing wrong with their computer, the scammer has tricked the person into believing a problem exists," says Clark.
"This leads to your credit card information being compromised as it is given to the scammer. In some cases the 'service' they offer may even be the installation of malware or spyware, making the computer a fountain of information for them (scammers)."
Clark says police have received at least four calls from people who have fell victim to the scam.
He says one individual spent about 90 minutes on the phone with the scammers. People are generally out of pocket $150 to $300 or more.
"The callers have been using very aggressive tactics and have even called back multiple times," says Clark.
"Do not give in to their fraud as you will only be out the cash you paid for the phony service."
Clark reminds people never to give out their personal or financial information over the phone.
"And, never allow someone you don't know to have remote access to your computer - no matter how legitimate their sales pitch sounds."
He says a company such as Microsoft or any other computer related company would never contact users directly regarding a virus or infected computer.
