A body has been recovered from Okanagan lake and it's believed to be the man who failed to surface while swimming with his girlfriend last night.
10:30 a.m. update: The search for the swimmer who went missing Sunday evening resumed this morning at 9 a.m. and is now a recovery effort, according to a member of Kelowna Search and Rescue.
Approximately ten members of Kelowna SAR are on the water, near Watt Road this morning, using side scan and sonor checks, and at least one boat from Vernon SAR is en route to aid in the recovery.
Kelowna RCMP are asking boaters and swimmers to avoid the area in front of Boyce-Gyro Beach until the search has concluded.
The man is believed to be a 24-year-old from Surrey who may have encountered some difficulty staying afloat while swimming back to his boat. It is also thought the man may have been suffering from a shoulder injury that could have affected his ability to swim.
Searchers are looking for a male swimmer who disappeared in Okanagan Lake Sunday evening.
Witnesses say a female and male were swimming near a 16-foot boat when the male did not surface.
The young couple, who are from the Lower Mainland and had rented the boat, were 150 yards from shore near a private beach on Watt Rd. when the accident happened..
A lakefront homeowner noticed the boat, with no one on board, and spotted a woman in the water who appeared to be in distress.
The man went out on his jet ski and brought back the 23-year-old female who informed him that she had seen her boyfriend go under water but has not seen him since.
The incident happened shortly before 7 p.m.
Search teams are currently using personal water craft, kayaks and a small search boat to hunt for the missing man with additional help arriving over the coming hours.
Emergency crews, Victim Assistance, the RCMP, Kelowna SAR as well as members from Vernon Search and Rescue are being called in.
"Search and rescue have advised that they can continue to look for several more hours," said Cpl. Parmar with Kelowna RCMP.
"If need be, we'll resume in the morning."
