Stranded 4X4ers rescued in Greystokes

It was a long night for three Kelowna residents and a small dog.... but it might have been a lot longer, if not for a cell phone signal Central Okanagan Search and Rescue was able to track to their location.
The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue group responded at 2 a.m. Sunday to rescue three subjects who were stranded when they got their off-road vehicle stuck while exploring the Greystokes area, about 45 km northwest of Kelowna.
COSAR responded with nine members, two equipment trucks and four ATVs.
"Once we located the subjects by using their GPS co-ordinates from one of their cell phones, we managed to ride into the area and extract the subjects without any issues," explained Duane Tresnich of COSAR.
"The subjects, one female, two males and a little dog were cold, hungry and tired, but were in great shape considering they spent the night outdoors unprepared."
Upon being rescued one of the males commented that if it wasn’t for the information that was in the media last week about Search and Rescue groups in BC not charging for rescues, they probably would not have called.
"As it was, the subjects cell phone was just about to die as they did try to call friends to see if they would come and help out," Tresnich said. "Lucky for COSAR, all the contacted people turned them down, so we only had to rescue three people instead of many more."
The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue Society would like to remind the public that search and rescue teams in BC do not charge for their services or present any type of bill for anyone that requires a rescue in BC.
"But a handshake or hug goes a long way!," joked Tresnich.
"You do not have to wait for 24 hrs. to report anyone missing. In fact, the sooner the better," he said. "If you feel that your loved ones have not returned home at the appointed time, contact the RCMP and let them know. The RCMP will contact the nearest search and rescue group and we will go and find them any time of day or night."
