Baby born in KGH parking lot

One of Kelowna's newest citizens didn't want to wait to be born in Kelowna General Hospital.
A new son - born to parents Kevan and Kendra Gilbert, came into the world in the KGH's emergency entrance at 8:21 p.m. Thursday evening. His name is Benjamin Zachary Gilbert and he is a brother for 20-month-old sister Adelaide.
"We left our house in Ellison shortly after my wife's water broke, but the 25-minute car ride was too long for this lightning-fast labour," explained proud father Kevan.
"'The baby is coming now!' My wife Kendra yelled before we were halfway through the trip," he said.
Kevan says he quickly called 911 from the road, and had paramedics meet the couple at the hospital entrance, but their son was already to enter the world at his own pace.
"The baby was born the moment my wife was placed on the stretcher, born outside, in the parking lot, in the rain," said Gilbert.
The baby weighs 8 lbs, and is 19.2 inches in length.
Gilbert credits the quick work and experience of the emergency staff at KGH for bringing the situation under control quickly and ensuring mother and baby were safe and healthy under the circumstance.
"We are grateful for the staff who worked quickly to get our baby delivered safely," Gilbert said.
Mom and baby are healthy, and mom and dad are, well, still a little jittery after the night's drama.
"Our apologies to anyone who (we) cut off or freaked out during our frantic drive," joked Gilbert of the harrowing trip to the hospital.
