Yoga enthusiasts take over park

It was billed as the "okanagan's largest outdoor yoga class, but it may have been a bit of an understatement.

Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts - in fact, as many as 600 - were on hand Sunday morning at Stuart Park across from Kelowna City Hall, taking part in the outdoor yoga extravaganza. All proceeds - based entirely on donation - will go towards the Kelowna Community Food Bank. In addition to the cash donations, participants also generously donated hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food items towards the worthy local cause.

The participants - gleeful, smiling and ranging in age from less than four years to "somewhat elderly", and even one young man who was celebrating his 17th birthday - got a first-hand, 75-minute-long yoga encounter with practitioners from Oranj Fitness located on Lawrence Avenue downtown.

"I can't believe it's been five years hosting this event," said Sheila Chutskoff, owner of Oranj Fitness. "It's one of the most fun events we put on."

Oranj, the community-minded health and fitness studio annually brings the local yoga and tiness community together by hosting the Okanagan's Largest OUtdoor Yoga Class. This year, DJ Shado provided the background mixture of music to set the mood.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Kelowna Community Food Bank were equally as thrilled with the fundraiser which helps put thousands of dollars as well as hundreds, perhaps even tons of much-needed food items onto it's shelves.

"We never know when we might see more families come through our door," explained Vonnie Lavers, Executive DIrector of the local food bank. "That's why we are constantly in need of the community to replenish our food supplies.

"How we evaluate the food donations is we weigh it and allow $2.50 per pound to arrive at a figure."
