Kelowna museum unveils photo contest

Local photographers - professional or otherwise - have a chance to test their powers of observation as well as contribute to a bit of the area's history.

The Kelowna museums is launching the Foundations to Build On: Then & Now photo contest.  This is an opportunity to become a part of an exhibition, and to have your work displayed at the Kelowna museums.

The idea was the brainchild of Christina Neale, Programming Coordinator with Kelowna Museums.

"As I was reviewing the archival images, and hearing the various zany and noble stories, I really could not place their locations because things have changed so dramatically in the past 100 years," explained Neal. "I became very interested in locating these historical places in Kelowna’s modern landscape.

"My first project with the museums was to launch an interactive display at the Okanagan Heritage Museum which uses modern technology to place these historic images on the now familiar Google Maps," she continued. " It was a fun and exciting challenge for me, and inspired me to share this activity with the community."

The contest is simple: Log on to our blog at www.museumsoutloud.ca and pick one or more of the archival  images we have selected from the Kelowna Museums' public archives and show us your interpretation of that photo or show us how it looks today.

You can use any kind of camera to capture the photo - digital, polaroid, professional, and we definitely encourage the use of your smartphones. When you have your photo, come in to the Kelowna Museums and submit it. There are several ways in which you can do this:

Send your photo through email to [email protected]; or log on to our Facebook page www.facebook.com/Kelowna.Museums.Society  and submit them; or simply stop by the Okanagan Heritage Museum, located at 470 Queensway Ave., to drop off the photo file or physical image.

You will find full contest rules and regulations on our website mentioned previously. The contest runs until August 5th, 2013. We'll announce the grand prize winner at the Downtown Kelowna Block Party  on  August 10.

If you have any questions about the contest, call Christina Neale at (778) 478-9767 or email here
