A new board game themed after the hit Canadian TV series The Trailer Park Boys has just been released. The designers are two long time friends, and gamers, from Kelowna.
Derek Hodgins and Dave Phelps spent the last five years designing, developing and organizing production of the new board game, which went up for sale on their website Saturday.
"This has been our life for the last five years,” said Derek, who co-founded High Roller Games Inc. with Dave in 2011.
“It’s been quite the ride, but totally worthwhile. The fans are really pumped."
The High Roller Games team spent Saturday in a board room, making last minute preparations and celebrating the culmination of countless hours of work and dollars spent from their own pockets.
When they made the announcement via their Facebook page, the burst of activity caused their website to shut down and forced an emergency upgrade to their server.
"Even with our site crashing, we're still happy," said Dave.
Trailer Park Boys is a Canadian comedy mockumentary television series created by Mike Clattenberg for the Showcase network. It focuses on the misadventures of a group of trailer park residents living in the fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park in Nova Scotia.
"Mike (Clattenberg) was very helpful," said Dave. "He gave us a lot of input and encouragement throughout the later stages of development."
“We tried to stay true to the series,” added Derek. “Players move around the trailer park, making money from different schemes and growing dope in their trailers while trying to avoid cops and Lahey (the park supervisor). The goal is to buy the trailer park."
The game features 13 figurines, each representing a character from the show, and as in the series, alcohol brings negative consequences while marijuana, or ‘dope’ is an asset.
It won’t appeal to everyone, but the show’s cult following left over 100 comments in less than an hour on one fan page and orders have been rolling in ever since.
“We’re definitely proud of the overall quality of the game," said Derek.
"We're confident people will enjoy playing it.”
