Beach cleanup part of world awareness

Cleaner beaches, better water quality and better guardianship of the world's water supply.... lofty goals and noble aspirations.

A trio of organizations - Greenpeace Kelowna, Ocean Hour Canada and Idle No More - each dedicated in some way to these principles, were on hand Sunday morning at Gyro Beach on Lakeshore Drive to take part in a cleanup campaign, They also hope by their collective efforts to draw attention to toxic waste being dumped in oceans, beaches, rivers and lakes around the planet, with a particular focus on plastic water bottles.

About two dozen local citizens were on hand for the beach cleanup at Gyro, which was preceded by brief talks from Amanda Lounsbury of Ocean Hour Canada, and Stephen Sutherland on behalf of Idle No More, an indiginous-led, grassroots movement for peace and sovereignty. Representing Greenpeace Kelowna was Danielle Prins, a Vancouver native currently attending UBCO who is also a volunteer organizer for the Kelowna chapter of Greenpeace.

The Gyro cleanup is part of a world-wide effort to make beaches and waterways a little cleaner and encourages anyone who is interested to do some small part, whether under official recognition or not.

"The idea is you just go to your local beach and do your part to help keep beaches cleaner," explained Lounsbury.

Her group, Ocean Hour, is the organizer of the beach cleanup campaign globally. Ocean Hour is the world's first international weekly cleanup of the planet's waters.

Similar events take part every Saturday from 9-10 a.m. as part of an organized international beach cleanup campaign and awareness effort. Cleanups are encouraged anytime, but are set for each Saturday at a local beach, river, lake or waterway.

When the participants had finished collecting refuse on Gyro, they paddle en masse along the shoreline to Hot Sands Beach at City Park to provide a "show of solidarity."

Meanwhile, Idle No More has its own event planned for Kelowna City Park on Monday morning, July 1st. The event begins at 10:45 am and the theme is "protect our right to a clean-living Earth".
