Kelowna chef goes island hopping

An Okanagan chef is off to Prince Edward island this summer.

Katherine Foster of RauDZ Regional Table in Kelowna is one of four junior chefs selected to attend the 2nd annual Canadian Culinary Federation of Chefs & Cooks/Saputo Junior Culinary Exchange in PEI June 24 to July 9.

Chefs were selected after submitting a two-minute video application and recipes featuring the sponsors product.

Only four junior chefs from across Canada were selected for the exchange and Foster was the only chef from BC to make the grade.

"This will be the opportunity of a life time for Katherine. Her training in farm to table cooking will only be enhanced by the incredible bounty of PEI," says Chef Rod Butters of RauDZ.

This CCFCC/Saputo Culinary Exchange will have Katherine touring this beautiful east coast island from tip to tip working alongside some of PEI’s top chefs in their kitchens, experiencing early morning lobster fishing, harvesting mussels, a cheese making lesson, a visit to a local brewery and an exciting day with well-known celebrity Chef Michael Smith as he preps for one of the islands most popular fundraisers the ‘Village Feast.’

Foster says she is excited for the experience.

"I'm excited to immerse myself in the East Coast culture, as I know great people and great food are in store. I am so humbled to be one of the chosen few to embark on this adventure and look forward to bringing back all the new knowledge to BC," says Foster.

Stuart Klassen, president of the Okanagan Chefs Association says he is proud of the fact a local chef has been chosen to take part in the exchange.

“The Okanagan Chefs Association is dedicated to our young chefs, and we encourage our juniors to be active in our community, from fishmonger and breadmaking demos, food and wine pairing seminars, farming bursaries, knife sharping, community fundraising and the list goes on," says Klassen.

"I know Katherine will embrace this opportunity and share her new east coast education with her fellow junior chefs in our community.”
