Owls in the family
Photo: Contributed - Steve Wraith
Castanet viewer Steve Wraith spotted this owl outside his home in Kelowna. He says the barred owl is common to urban forest areas.
Best known for it's distinctive call, it is also commonly referred to as the hoot owl.
They prey in the early mornings or evenings on meadow voles, mice and shrews, but have been known to hunt small pets.
