The people’s summit on Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Project will be taking place in Kelowna this weekend and has been organized by the Council of Canadians. It’s being described as an information session to learn about what is at stake in the decisions being contemplated by the National Energy Board.

“The People's Summit on Enbridge should be attended by anyone who is concerned about our rivers, our coast and our environmental decision-making process,” says co-organizer Carol Kergan, in a press release for the event.

“People care about decisions which can impact life as we understand it for all generations to come. These are not decisions to make for economic reasons alone, we have to think of true sustainability for our province. Short-sighted and fast decisions undermine that process; not often does the Okanagan Valley have such a special panel to learn from and ask questions of.”

The event is being held on Jan. 26 from 7-9 p.m. at the First United Church Hall. Guests on hand will include Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, filmmaker Damien Gillis, NDP MLA Rob Fleming and Green Party leader Elizabeth May.

The summit is planned as a lead-in to the community hearing of the joint review panel that will take place on Jan. 28 at the Sandman Inn. Kelowna is the only community in the interior of BC to be designated as a host.
